Colonel John Folsom, who served two tours in Iraq and Afghanistan in the United States Marine Corps., founded Wounded Warriors Family Support in 2003. Now retired from active duty, this Marine exemplifies that old adage that once you’re a Marine, you’re always a Marine, using his pony car for a new mission to bring support to the families of United States Wounded Warriors. Knowing firsthand how not only the wounded warrior suffers but also the families often struggle financially and psychologically,
With the founding of Wounded Warriors Family Support, Folsom chose the Mustang as the symbol to represent the mission, saying he feels the Mustang is a symbol for American beliefs, and would connect with others. Folsom and his pony’s mission is to provide support to the families of those who have been wounded, injured or killed during combat operations. Since the founding of Wounded Warriors Family Support, Folsom and his special pony have traveled across our great nation in the “High Five Tour” each year. The quintessential road trip across the United States to thank Americans for their appreciation and support of our country’s military families for the sacrifices that they have made during time of war and to raise money through donations.
During the four month tour the Mustang travels more than 26,000 miles criss-crossing the United States. Making stops in 48 states, visiting on average sixty cities. This year for the journey a 2014 GT500 has been selected. Wounded Warriors Family Support would like to rally the support of Americans to show support for military families by visiting a stop on the tour to sign the car with a message of support.
Just a few examples of how Wounded Warriors Family Support helps, this year they organization pledged $1,000,000 dollars towards building two “Smart Homes” for two deserving warriors and their families. The organization also provides families with dependent children the opportunity to take a relaxing week at one of their great get-away locations in Orlando, Florida. The road to recovery is often a long and difficult struggle for our service men and women returning from combat. Colonel Folsom’s hope is to in some way help them and to bring some sense of normalcy to their lives.
