It is no secret that Ford’s luxury brand, Lincoln, has been in a bit of a funk. The Blue Oval is taking drastic measures to remake Lincoln (now known as the Lincoln Motor Company) including a slew of new products, concepts, and a bold new advertising campaign. It’s been awhile since we felt much of anything about Lincoln, but this latest television ad really adds a new appeal to the old luxury car brand.
The aptly-named “Phoenix” commercial stars the all-new Lincoln MKZ, the vehicle charged with launching Lincoln into a new, younger and fresher era.
The television spot starts off with the classic early-90s Lincoln Town Car, one of the last iconic Lincolns the company has produced. The MKZ then takes its place, obviously being heralded as the successor to this legendary vehicle. Then come the metaphors.
“A hawk with night vision goggles,” the narrator says. The new MKZ is “…marching to the beat of a different drum” and “Big ideas with smaller footprints” referring to the 2.0 liter EcoBoost engine that comes standard. Cue a cameo from Abraham Lincoln himself, and you have one of the most compelling car commercials in recent memory…at least for the Lincoln Motor Company.
Does this commercial do the trick? Is Lincoln back in a big way? Or does the brand still have a long ways to go?
