After some 50 years of people building early fastback Ford Mustangs, it really takes something special to stand out from the crowd and step above the rest. If you can think it up, chances are its already been done — at least twice.

However, when we first laid eyes on Scottie D’s video feature on George Lane’s stunning, red 1965 Mustang, built by Bobby Alloway  and crew at Alloway’s Hot Rod Shop in Louisville, Tennessee, we knew it definitely stood out from the crowd.

The key to any successful hot rod build is the suspension and the stance. This ’65 kills them both thanks to a complete setup from Detroit Speed. A set of perfectly sized, custom Shelby-inspired wheels from Billet Specialties wrapped in Toyo Tires finish it off perfectly.

The interior in this Mustang is a work of art of its own. Customized by Steve Holcomb at Pro Auto Custom Interiors, it features a nice mix of modern and nostalgic styling cues. The seats are Recaros covered in metallic gray leather with an original style look in the inserts. The steering wheel and rear seat delete pay tribute to a Shelby of the era. Only the shifter can be found protruding from the transmission tunnel — no fancy consoles or electronics. This car was built with the autocross course in mind.

The car is powered by a late ’80s/early ’90s Robert Yates Racing engine designed for the Trans Am racing series. The engine is 302 based but is topped with a set of Yates 351 heads and makes over 600 horsepower; all tying in the “T.A.600” moniker.

The real eye-catcher on this fastback is the color. Originally slated for a white-with-blue-stripes paint scheme, The car ended up being finished in a new Porsche color called Carmine Red after a brief flirtation with a basic black paint job. The teutonic hue delivers a unique that really works well with both the polished Billet Specialties wheels and the matte treatment on the hood and front spoiler. A subtle T.A. 600 side stripe finishes off the look of one of the best looking first0generation Ford Mustang fastbacks we have saw in a long while.
