1,800-Horsepower, Barn-Find Falcon Is A Force On The Drag Strip

In today’s world, a quick vinyl wrap can turn a show car into one that looks like a barn find in a matter of hours. Others, like Paul Witty’s Ford Falcon, sit out there in the field and earn their patina the old fashioned way. However, as ancient as this rust makes the car look, there is a modern beast under the rusty Falcon sheet metal. The Falcon has a 521 Ford big-block stuffed inside a 25.4-spec, mild-steel chassis. That big-block is force fed via a 1471 blower pushing the car down the track or street with no problem.

Ford made its Falcon in America from 1960 to 1970. While the third-generation Falcon (1966-1970) became a little larger, the first two generation of the Falcon were small, economy-size cars. Coming from the factory with nothing bigger than a 289ci V8. This small, lightweight platform is the perfect candidate to shove a huge big-block engine in, just as Paul has done with the Rusty Falcon.

According to Paul, the car makes somewhere around 1,800 horsepower. In the video above, he took his car all the way to the finals in the Big Tire Class at the Coffeyville Street Drags in Coffeyville, Kansas, where he lost out to a Pontiac GTO due to a loss of fuel pressure thanks to a blown fuel line. Without the mechanical issue in the finals, there would undoubtedly have been a different ending to this story. Win or lose, Paul has one nasty, albeit rusty Ford Falcon.

About the author

Jeff Southard

Growing up with a dad who loved Corvettes, I was destined to be a gearhead from day one. Beyond that, my dad owned an auto parts business for over 25 years. There, I learned the automotive basics as a child, then began my professional career working there after high school. From Corvettes and Superbirds to Hemis and Cobra Jets, my dad has owned a little of everything over the years, so I've had my chance to get some quality seat time behind the wheel of some rare, unique, and sometimes, just odd automobiles. I have owned my share of toys, including over 20 Mustangs. I guess to make a long story short, if you look up "car crazy" you will probably find my photo listed pretty close to it!
