Although certainly not new by any means, heads-up shootouts amongst the “Big Three” factory super cars are gaining momentum these days, with ongoing events being contested in the NHRA and now in NMCA competition. Anthony Bongiovanni, a familiar face in the NHRA Stock and Super Stock ranks, picked up the phone and called well known chassis buildernDarren Breaud at B&B Race Cars in Hohenwald, Tennessee to discuss a new race car for his stable. After numerous talks with Breaud on the project, the wheels were turning and the welders were being turned on at B&B to start the latest creation for Bongiovanni Racing.

A view that Bongiovanni is hoping to show much of his competition, the rear section of the ’16 Cobra Jet.
Starting from the ground up, Breaud and his skilled team began building the ’16 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet clone from a body-in-white, first installing their own roll cage design, which is certified to 7.50. B&B converted the IRS rear suspension to the NHRA-legal Cobra Jet rear suspension package that utilizes a four-link and a Ford 9-inch rear end housing to provide the adequate hook needed to be competitive and make consistent runs. After completing all of the suspension installation and custom fabrication work on other components, this Cobra Jet was ready to sit on all fours.
The classic Bongiovanni Racing scheme made up of Ford Deep Impact Blue, white, and black were incorporated into a design by Larry Williams and applied by Chris Avaritt at Crossthreaded Customs to finish off the amazing exterior appearance.

Quillen’s attention to detail falls right in line with B&B Race Cars’ reputation – all lights are functional, including the puddle lights!
Under the hood sits a 5.0 liter Cobra Jet Coyote engine with a Whipple supercharger providing ample amounts of boost. Jimmy LaRocca and Bongiovanni are in charge of the collaboration and trackside tuning, along with crew chief, Ricky Hertzog. Travis Quillen from Quillen Motorsports Engineering was hired to do the tedious job of wiring the extravagant Cobra Jet with functional headlights, taillights and even the lit Pony that shines on the ground when you open the door Quillen also is providing tuning assistance using the FAST engine management system and his wealth of knowledge and experience.
The traditional paint scheme for Bongiovanni Racing keeps the exterior looking clean while a Racepak IQ3 dash piece illuminates the driver's office.
Anthony wanted to thank Optima Batteries, Micro Strategies, Resource1, B&B Race Cars, and Quillen Motorsports Engineering for their hard work to take this ’16 Cobra Jet from mild to wild, not only in performance, but in show-quality, mind-stopping beauty. Keep your eyes peeled for this pony at an NHRA or NMCA event near you soon!
