In April of 1964, the World Fair came to Flushing Meadows in Queens, New York, as a showcase of the latest and greatest technologies the world had to offer. It was no wonder why Ford chose this particular place to debut the 1964 Ford Mustang. 50 years later to the day, and Ford returned to the site of the ‘64 World’s Fair with over 90 other Mustang owners to help celebrate a half-century of America’s favorite sports car.
It was another notable tribute in Ford’s ongoing celebration of the Mustang’s 50th anniversary, returning to the place where many saw the pony car for the very first time.
“It’s a great feeling to be here at Flushing Meadows 50 years to the day after Ford unveiled the original Mustang at the 1964 World’s Fair,” said Raj Nair, vice president of global product development. “Seeing the devotion that owners put into caring for these amazing classic Mustangs reinforces why we put so much passion and effort into making the all-new 2015 Mustang great.”
The event drew 94 classic Mustangs from the first generation, though on the day of the original unveiling, Ford took an amazing 22,000 orders for the Mustang. It would take just 18 months for Ford to sell a million Mustangs, blowing away even the most optimistic sales projections. Is it any wonder we’re still celebrating the original Mustang 50 years later?
