The worlds of custom car and custom motorcycle building are not all that far apart, and there has been plenty of crossover between the two in recent times. Sure, there are certain nuances between working on a big heavy muscle car and a smaller, leaner custom chopper, but the ideas and inspiration is still the same. It takes a very intelligent and dedicated person to bring complete custom vehicles to life, no matter how many wheels they have, and we are always inspired by these creative types.
Roland Sands is a well-known custom bike builder who also used to race, and Royal Purple recently featured him in a brief video as part of their Outperformer Series. In the video, Roland Sands talks about what it takes to bring the ideas in his head to life.
Sands says he is generally really “stoked” to “bring an original idea to life.” It is a “complete circle” for him, and we can see where he is coming from. Taking the barest of ideas and making it into reality is sort of like giving birth to a mechanical baby. Sands has always been around motorcycles, having grown up around them before racing them professionally.
Sands ended up racing at the highest level; racing, winning, and setting records. Around 2002 though Sands moved away from racing, and into creating. Perhaps the best thing Sands has to say though is that he isn’t concerned about being the best, so much as he is concerned about building something cool and truly unique. He acknowledges the abundence of talent out there…but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for more.
The video is very well done, and anybody who is interested in the creative process behind custom vehicles would do well to heed Roland Sand’s words. Check it out!
