The Ford Mustang long ago achieved legendary automobile status, and it is perhaps the most recognizable American sports car around the world. An entire industry has spawned around the Mustang, emblazoning the name and logo onto just about every form of merchandise imaginable, to speak nothing of the dizzying array of performance and aesthetic enhancements for the car itself.

Interestingly enough, this latest piece of Mustang memorabilia manages to combine both the car and merchandising into a single compelling piece. We’re speaking of the P-51 Automatic Watch by REC, which utilizes recycled parts from classic Mustangs to assemble unique and droolworthy wristwatches. This is so much more than just a watch.

Rather, each watch offers a unique journey behind its assembly, as each recycled Mustang receives a scannable story card  that tells the story of the car that became your watch. Each top dial features recycled metal, as well as an authentic-looking VIN card emblazoned on the watch face from the car that donated itself to the timepiece.

There are plenty of indicators that this is a Mustang-themed watch, including the P-51 name (alluding to the Mustang airplane of World War II, which originally inspired the moniker) and the watch face itself, designed after the iconic speedometer. There are other nods and winks to the Mustang in this watch, though you have to have a keen eye to see them all. The Kickstarter is already over 150% funded, so the P-51 series of watches is definitely getting made. While the lowest-priced tier to actually get a watch is sold out, the higher tiers still offer as much as 40% savings off the expected retail price of $1,500.

Is that a lot for a watch? We suppose. But consider you’ll be wearing real vintage steel from a classic Mustang, and that people regularly pay that much or more for a set of wheels for their ride. Maybe those new wheels can wait though.
