While there are many new and exciting features in the 2015 Ford Mustang, by far the most talked-about bit was what would be under the hood. We’ve since learned that while both the 3.7 liter V6 and 5.0 liter V8 carry on, they would be joined by a 2.3 liter EcoBoost turbo four-cylinder. Ford has been mum on horsepower and torque specifications, and hasn’t even released an underhood shot of the motor yet.

So we’re not sure how they feel about this video, which appears to have come out of the Detroit Auto Show last week thanks to Hooniverse. What we’re seeing is our first look at the 2.3 liter EcoBoost engine nestled into the massive Mustang engine bay…and if you ask us, it looks right at home.

Ford is keeping details on output close to the chest, but rumor has it the 2.3 liter four-banger will be good for around 305 horsepower and 320 ft-lbs of torque. That should make it the middle-of-the-road option, offering superior fuel economy, more torque, and additional performance potential than the standard V6. We’re expecting 34 MPG on the highway from the four-banger Mustang, proving once and for all that you can have your cake, and eat it too.

It has taken some cutting-edge technology to make that much power though, including a twin-scroll turbo setup and direct injection. Ford also hasn’t said as much, but we expect the 2.3 liter engine will be a lot lighter than the V6 and V8 models as well, delivering even more performance and fuel efficiency. We included some shots of the 2.3 liter EcoBoost cross-section Ford had on display in Detroit, and we’re certain the production model will get a prettier engine cover as well.

Not to say we’re underwhelmed. It’s just that after all this hype, a little chrome or an embossed “FORD 2.3” would have been nice. We’re fairly certain that the first thing most aftermarket tuners are thinking when they see these pics is that new cold air induction will most certainly be one of the first parts to go on these cars when they hit the roads. As much as we’re chomping to get behind the wheels of a GT, we also can’t wait to see how the EcoBoost performs.
